Swann calls for inclusion of Knockmore line in DFI Transport Strategy

Disappointment has been expressed after the re-opening of the rail link to Belfast International Airport was left out of a major new plan.
Following the publication of the Department for Infrastructure’s draft Transport Strategy consultation, South Antrim MP Robin Swann has welcomed the work undertaken to plan for Northern Ireland’s long-term transport network, but expressed disappointment at the absence of key rail projects, including the re-opening of the Knockmore Line.
The Knockmore Line, connecting Lisburn and Antrim via Crumlin and Glenavy, represents a crucial piece of strategic infrastructure that would significantly improve regional connectivity, ease traffic congestion and support economic development across South Antrim and the wider Belfast metropolitan area.
Speaking following the release of the consultation document, Robin Swann MP said: "I recognise the extensive work that the Department for Infrastructure has put into developing this consultation document and shaping a vision for our transport network up to 2035. Setting out a strategic roadmap for sustainable and resilient infrastructure is incredibly important for the future growth of Northern Ireland.
"However, I am disappointed to see no explicit mention of key local rail projects, most notably the Knockmore Line. Substantial preliminary work and feasibility studies have already been completed on this line over recent years. It is crucial that this progress is not lost and that the project is not pushed onto the back burner.
"The Knockmore Line holds huge potential for South Antrim and beyond, offering enhanced passenger rail services, improved access to Belfast International Airport and direct benefits for our local communities.
"As the consultation process progresses and subsequent operational plans are published, I strongly urge the Department to ensure that the Knockmore Line remains a top priority and we see a direct link between the previous documents published and supported by the Minister which set out a future for transport including rail."
